Blame It On Trio

Sax - Frank Villafranca
Trombone - Jim Lewis
Guitar - Dave Antonio
Keyboard - Dominic Mazzoni
Bass - Peter Kastner
Drums - Steve Pemberton

Seven on Seven
Composed & arranged by Dominic Mazzoni
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Dominic Mazzoni - Piano
    Frank Villafranca - Soprano Sax
    Dave Antonio - Guitar

Since the group is titled the San Gabriel Seven, I took the challenge of writing a song with a time signature of seven and ended up with this melodic and somewhat melancholy piece. It actually goes in and out of 7/4 and 6/4 time, and if you listen close you'll also hear several seven-note phrases and seven-measure passages.

Blame It On Trio
Composed & arranged by Dominic Mazzoni
Published byJRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Jim Lewis - Trombone
    Frank Villafranca - Alto Sax

This burnin' piece has so much nergy and such a big sound that you might think it's a full big band instead of a septet! The title is a pun on an obscure 80's movie, and the "trio" could refer to either the horn trio (trumpet, sax, trombone) or the rhythm trio (guitar, bass, drums), but actually I am the one to blame for this piece.

Samba for Seven
Composed & arranged by Jim Lewis
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Jim Lewis - Trombone
    Frank Villafranca - Alto Sax

This tune was inspired by a trip I took to Cochabamba, Bolivia in the Spring of 2000. The vibrant Latimn American culture, beautiful mountains and the annual Cinco de Mayo festival provided a perfect setting for the composition of this piece which features Brenda on flugelhorn followed by myself and Frank in the solo section. Dom's montuno laying and Steve's powerful drumming make this one of our favorite performance numbers.

Frank's Sonata
Composed and arranged by Frank Villafranca
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Frank Villafranca - Soprano Sax
Dominic Mazzoni - Piano & Keyboard

Personally, I love playing ballads. I guess it's the opportunity to express a different type of emotion than you would on the high energy, up-tempo tunes. Having a desire to add more soprano sax playing opportunities to our repertoire, I recorded a quick demo in my studio and later completed the arrangement for San Gabriel Seven. Fortunately, orchestrating the soprano saxophone fit well with this particular melody. For me, thinking of a title is the most difficult part. Faced with a "save dialog box" in the early stages, I just typed in "Sonata." being a name of common use, I was not completely happy, so I opened the floor for new titles from everyone in the band. Thanks to Dominic for his lovely introduction of "Frank's Sonata" at the Holly Street Bar & Grill, I smile every time I hear it.

Rio Que Eu Amo
Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Arranged by Jeff Bunnell
Solos:
    Brenda Goforth - Flugel
    Dominic Mazzoni - Piano

This is an obscure bossa written by A.C. Jobim and featured in the movie of the same name in the late sixties. Brenda discovered it several years ago as a vocal duet sung in Portuguese and fell in love with it. In February of 2006, I heard it for the first time and commissioned Jeff Bunnell to arrange it for SG7. It has become one of our signature pieces and is used as a solo vehicle for our guest artists.

All Funked Up
Composed and arranged by Bruse Lofgren
Published by Defunked Music, BMI
Solos:
    Dave Antonio - Guitar
    Frank Villafranca - Tenor Sax

"All Funked Up" is a freewheeling, bluesy, energy-funk tune. It has a loping bass line which works with the other rhythm section instruments to provide support and echo-like commentary on the melody, which builds energy through repetition and rhythmic juxtaposition. It has some tricky phrases in it (which I knew because I had difficulties in rehearsing another arrangement of it with my own band), so it was no surprise to me at the first rehearsal of it with SG7 that some of the phrases were problematic. But fast forward to one month later, when I returned they had worked on the piece individually and collectively. WOW! They knocked my socks off. They had not only smoothed out the kinks of the phrasing, but they brought the piece to life, bringing together all of my intended elements as well as some of their own. It pops with energy and attitude!

The Bone Specialist
Composed and arranged by Dave Cushman
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Jim Lewsi - Trombone
    Domini Mazzoni - Keyboard

Originally written for Roch, the trombone player in the band Frank and I had. An easy listening tune showcasing the trombone. The sax joins in on the bridge for a challenging collection of notes. The song ends the same way it began, with the trombone soloing.

You're Burnin Man
Composed and arranged by Dave Cushman
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Frank Villafranca - Flute/Alto Sax
    Dominic Mazzoni - Piano

A samba inspired by Frank playing his flute one summer day in September, a bright melody that bounces along lighter than the wind. The melody starts with the flute, harmon trumpet, and guitar playing the melody while the trombone and keyboard play well together in the background. The melody switches back and forth from the alto sax/guitar and the trumpet/trombone, solos, and then the band joins together to finish it off.

Rampant Ronnie
Composed and arranged by Dominic Mazzoni
Published by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solos:
    Frank Villafranca - Alto Sax
    Dave Antonio - Guitar
    Dominic Mazzoni - Piano

Brenda came up with the name accidently while trying to think of Bill Watrous' composition "Dirty Dan." and I subsequently wrote this song to fit the name. The piece gets a unique sound by putting the trumpet in harmony underneath the alto sax while the rest of the band plays a zoot-suit style riff.

South Bay Grease
Composed and arranged by Jeff Bunnell
Published by Old Vines Music, ASCAP
Solos:
    Peter Kastner - Bass
    Dave Antonio - Guitar
    Jim Lewis -Trombone

This piece was written as a tribute to the great band Tower of Power. Growing up in the San Francisco bay area, I heard Tower of Power in person many times and their music left a big impression on me. It starts out with a simple "Tower" type funk groove, with the horns stating the melody. Near the end, the horns are featured in a break-down section ala Tower Of Power.

Annie Speaks
Composed and arranged by Dave Cushman
Pulished by JRL SGS Publishing, ASCAP
Solo:
    Brenda Goforth - Flugel

This composition featuring Brenda on flugelhorn was written for the love of my life (you guessed it - Annie!). A rockish style ballad that weaves in the words spoken to me in a melodic manner. What are the words? Listen.
